School librarians play a critical role in supporting literacy, but demonstrating that impact can prove challenging.

This one-hour, online lightning learning focuses on independent reading as a strategy to grow reading skills. You will explore ways to align choice reading with instructional goals and communicate outcomes to teachers and administrators effectively.

You will leave this 1-hour lightning session with ideas for:

boosting reading engagement with students in grades 6-12,
promoting a school-wide culture of independent reading, and
clearly articulating the library’s role in improving student literacy.

COURSE INSTRUCTORS

Rebecca Caufman, Librarian, Radford City Schools

Rebecca Rebecca is a 7th - 12th grade librarian in Virginia. She has been in education for over 20 years. She began her teaching career as an elementary classroom teacher. Questions on how to best teach reading led her to get a Master’s degree in reading and a Ph.D. in literacy. She has worked as a first through eighth-grade reading specialist prior to becoming a secondary school librarian.

Kendel Lively, Librarian, Botetourt County Public Schools

Kendel Lively Kendel is currently a high school librarian in Virginia. She has been in education for over 30 years. A passion for teaching led her to get a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and the School Librarian endorsement.Kendel is the current Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) Advocacy Committee Chair and is a VAASL Past President. She has worked as a high school social studies teacher prior to becoming a secondary school librarian.

This is an online, 1-hour lightning learning. You’ll earn one hour of PD credit and a Library Journal certificate of completion.
