IS YOUR LIBRARY CAUGHT BETWEEN WELCOMING EVERYONE AND KEEPING EVERYONE SAFE?

  • Frontline staff feel underprepared or handle situations differently depending on who's working.
  • You have a safety plan somewhere, but you're not confident it reflects your current building, staff, or community realities.
  • Staff are absorbing the stress of an increasingly complex public environment with little training or clear guidance.
  • You believe in open access, but you're trying to reconcile that with a staff that doesn't always feel safe.
  • You want to be welcoming to all patrons, but you're not always sure where the line is between accommodation and disruption.

This series was built to address that tension.

ABOUT THIS SERIES

Two courses. One cohesive approach to safety, service, and leadership in the modern public library.

Live Sessions:
August 26, 2:00 - 4:00 pm ET; August 27, 12:00 - 4:00 pm ET

Library safety and patron service are not separate problems. They are two sides of the same challenge: how do you create a library that is genuinely welcoming to everyone while giving your staff the frameworks, language, and confidence to handle what actually walks through the door?

This two-part series gives you both.

Part 1 (Everyone Deserves a Library: Serving Patrons Experiencing Homelessness) equips frontline staff with a consistent, compassion-centered approach to serving patrons experiencing homelessness. Part 2 (Safe by Design: A Library Leader’s Guide to Safety and Securityhelps library leaders turn safety from something reactive and overwhelming into something intentional, workable, and aligned with your values.

Together, they build a stronger, more consistent culture across your whole organization.

This is a series of two live sessions (August 26, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm ET and August 27, 2026 from 12:00 to 4:00 pm ET). You will have access to the on-demand recordings for six months after the class start date. For more details, check out the What to Expect tab.

Everyone Deserves a Library: Serving Patrons Experiencing Homelessness

Serving patrons experiencing homelessness is no longer a rare edge case in public libraries. This course gives staff a more consistent, compassionate way to respond — without leaving every interaction up to personal instinct.

Safe by Design: A Library Leader’s Guide to Safety and Security

Library safety is not one policy decision. It is an ongoing set of tradeoffs between access, staff well-being, and real-world situations that don't come with clean answers. This course helps leaders make those decisions more intentionally.

If you are someone who:

  • regularly serves patrons experiencing homelessness or unsafe situations
  • worries your staff is underprepared and handling things inconsistently
  • has watched a situation escalate and wasn't sure what to do
  • isn't confident your safety plan reflects your real building and community
  • wants a framework your whole team can actually use

This certification was built for you.

This series is especially helpful for:

  • Frontline staff working directly with patrons in shared spaces who want to respond with more clarity and confidence.
  • Supervisors and managers responsible for setting policies or supporting staff through difficult situations.
  • Library leaders working to create more consistency across shifts, teams, or departments.
  • Anyone involved in frontline service, patron support, or community engagement who is trying to balance compassion for individuals with the needs of the broader library community.

If you are a public library worker or leader, you will benefit from this certification series.
