This course helps you figure out what your library needs most, how to talk about those needs clearly, and where real funding opportunities may already exist.

  • Clearer ways to assess needs and decide what is actually worth pursuing
  • More practical tools for writing a stronger need statement and building a funding case
  • A better sense of where to look for funding and who to bring into the conversation

Take this course on its own, or complete both courses in the series to earn the School Library Funding certification from School Library Journal.

THIS COURSE IS FOR YOU IF...

  • You keep hearing some version of “that’s a great idea, but there’s no money for it.”
  • You know your library needs something, but turning that need into a convincing ask feels harder than it should.
  • You want a more realistic way to move good ideas forward without becoming a full-time fundraiser.

This course gives you a practical path for moving great library ideas foward when funding feels out of reach.

THIS COURSE CONSISTS OF 3 ON-DEMAND MODULES:

Module 1: From great idea to impactful need

In this module, you’ll learn how to conduct a need assessment and why it strengthens your funding request. You’ll explore different types of data to tap into and quick assessments that inform the impact of your ideas. Lastly, you’ll wrap up the module by gathering and drafting a shortlist of ideas that are likely to make the most impact on your school community.

Module 2: From impactful need to a fundable request

In this module, you’ll learn techniques to prioritize needs based on impact, starting with your own list of ideas generated in module 1. You’ll determine the why, who and what of your proposal, and write a concise need statement that demonstrates impact. By the end, you’ll have a statement that can be used with school principals, the PTA, grant funders and more!

Module 3: From fundable request to funding partners

In this final module, you’ll learn about internal and external sources of funding that are ready to be tapped into. You'll learn about the school funding ecosystem, plus the ins and outs of asking for funding at the right time of year. You’ll discover strategies for finding external funding partners, tailoring your message to the funders’ needs, and gain insight into your district’s policies around external support. Lastly, you’ll close the loop to show appreciation for and sustain relationships with funders.

This course is part of the larger two-course certification series focused on school library funding, but Part 1 stands on its own as the place to build the foundation. It helps you get clear on what your library needs, what is most worth pursuing, and how to turn those needs into a request that is easier for decision-makers and potential supporters to say yes to.

You will work through the early-stage thinking that often gets skipped when people jump straight to asking for money. That includes assessing needs, prioritizing ideas, writing a strong need statement, and understanding how funding actually works inside schools and districts. You will also look beyond your building to identify internal and external funding opportunities that align with your goals.

This course also focuses on relationship-building as part of the funding process. You will explore how to identify people and organizations already connected to your school community, how to shape your message around impact, and how to begin creating a practical funding path that does not feel random or exhausting.
